7 Tips For September And Celebrating “Healthy Aging” Month

September 11, 2020

“Getting old is like climbing a mountain; you get a little out of breath, but the view is much better!”

—Ingrid Bergman

September is “Healthy Aging Month” and we’re celebrating here at Collier Home Care with seven healthy aging strategies for seniors who want to celebrate the positive aspects of growing older…and wiser!

Seven Ways To Stay Healthy As We Get Older

1.) Age Isn’t A Number; It’s How You Feel.

How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are? It’s a good question! If you stayed away from the mirror and focused on how you feel, how old are you? Think back to your favorite age and recreate the circumstances that made you feel so good during that time.

2.) Get Virtual With Zoom!

You don’t have to be a tech wizard to stay connected with family and friends. Zoom is an easy computer program for holding virtual meetings. In this age of social distancing, Zoom is a popular choice for book club meetings, choir rehearsals, church services, or inviting someone “over” for a meal or happy hour. Here’s a step-by-step guide on learning how to use Zoom so you can keep your spirits lifted!

3.) Make Yourself A Priority.

As a parent or grandparent, you may have spent years caring for others. It’s time to take care of yourself again. Schedule activities you enjoy. Cook foods you like to eat. Visit places that bring you joy. Listen to your favorite music. This also includes you own health and well-being. Maybe it’s time to set up your annual physical or another health screening. If you’re not sure where to begin, check out MyHealthFinder. It’s a list of recommended annual health screenings and a great resource for seniors.

4.) Stay Positive.

We all know those negative people who complain about everything. Positivity is a huge component in healthy aging, so stay where the joy is! Name the things you’re grateful for, stay in touch with your positive, happy, and energetic friends and keep on smiling!

5.) Adopt A Four-Legged Friend.

Whether you live by yourself or with someone else, a pet can bring lots of joy to life…not to mention physical and social benefits, too. Check out The Pets for the Elderly Foundation. They help cover fees for seniors (age 60+) who adopt a dog or cat from a participating animal shelter.

6.) Let Inspiration Strike.

It’s never too late to learn something new, discover a sport, release your inner artist, or rekindle an old passion. Search for topics you love on YouTube, download a free podcast, or buy an empty notebook and take up writing again!

7.) Ask For Help When You Need It.

Asking for someone to lend a hand can be hard to do, but it’s important. Oftentimes seniors will call us when they want to stay safely, securely, and independently at home instead of moving to a retirement home. Depending on what you need, Collier Home Care offers between one and 24 hours a day service, plus live-in care. If healthy aging means staying at home, we’re here to support you. It is our pleasure to care for you, your family, and your loved ones. If we can help with home health care services or determine an appropriate level of care, call us at (239) 920-3902 or reach us here.

Here’s to your healthy aging!
